The lion is embroidered in thread matched to the cloth: black on black, bone on bone, olive on olive. Across a room it reads as one clean color. Up close, and when the light moves across the stitches, the mark shows.

The gold chevrons on the lion are sergeant's stripes. The sergeant is the leader closest to the men: he trains the new guys, checks their gear, eats last and brings everybody home. His job is to make more leaders.
